Join Stephen Levett from the University of York School of Law at 5 pm ET on Thursday, January 26th, to learn about what the York Law program involves and why studying at the historic northern English university might appeal to you.
Stephen Levett, Admissions Tutor for the University of York Law School, and Baroness Hale Legal Clinic Supervisor will talk about why York is such an exciting place to study.
Stephen Levett is a Senior Lecturer in Professional Practice at York Law School and the Undergraduate Admissions Tutor. After working for the UK Government Legal Service, he has gone on to hold a variety of senior posts at prestigious UK institutions including Deputy Director of the York campus of the University of Law, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Business, Law and Tourism at the University of Sunderland and Director of Clinical Legal Education at King's College London (KCL).
“Our LLB Senior Status is unique in the UK in that we have built the programme around Problem Based Learning (PBL) and Skills. PBL is all about placing problems at the heart of your learning. It is rare that a legal issue comes neatly wrapped up as a Sale of Goods Act problem or a Landlord and Tenant Act question.
Instead, clients normally turn up with a whole bunch of concerns and questions bundled up together in no particular order. It is your job as a lawyer to unpick those problems, clarify the client’s questions, research them and then give the client an answer in a language they understand.
Our teaching approach mirrors the real-life untidiness of legal issues. We still teach you all the foundation subjects that you would study on a more traditional law course, but instead of doing the work for you, we train you in how to find the connections between areas of law and how to unbundle those problems for yourself.
One of the big advantages of teaching through a series of problems is that we are able to quickly adapt them to reflect recent developments such as the Black Lives Matter and #MeToo movements, or the developing climate crisis. “
Study in UK has over 15 years of experience in helping international students apply to UK Law Schools and can provide you with guidance on everything you need to consider before making your final choice.
