For many Canadians planning to study in the UK, the visa process can feel completely overwhelming. However, with a little guidance, it can actually be surprisingly straight-forward!.
As the official representative of UK universities, SI-UK gives free support to Canadian students throughout the visa process, and even offers you the chance to secure priority visa appointments!
Read our guide for everything you need to know about the UK student visa application.
1. Do You Need a UK Student Visa?
As a Canadian citizen, you'll need a Student visa (formerly known as the Tier 4 visa) if you're planning to study in the UK for more than six months. For shorter courses, a Standard Visitor visa may suffice.
2. When Should You Apply?
You can apply for your Student visa up to six months before your course start date, but only after you've received your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from a UK university. It's wise to apply as early as possible to avoid delays.
3. Key Documents You'll Need
Prepare the following documents for a smooth application process:
- Valid Passport: Ensure it's valid for the duration of your stay.
- CAS Statement: Provided by your UK university after accepting your offer.
In some rare cases, you may require additional documents such as Proof of Funds, English Language Proficiency Results, or a Tuberculosis Test Certificate. Contact your SI-UK consultant to double check whether you require these documents!
4. How to Apply
Follow these steps to submit your application:
- Online Application: Complete the online form on the UK Government website.
- Pay the Fees: These include a Visa Application Fee, and an Immigration Health Surcharge
- Submit Biometrics: Book an appointment at a Visa Application Centre to provide fingerprints, a photograph, and supporting documents. At busy times of the year, these appointments may be few and far between - SI-UK North America has access to hundreds of priority visa appointments for our students. Contact your SI-UK consultant to find out more.
5. What Happens After You Apply?
The UKVI usually processes applications within three weeks, but delays can happen, so apply early. Once approved, you'll receive a Visa Decision Letter and a 30-day entry vignette in your passport. You'll collect your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) upon arrival in the UK.
Applying for a UK visa as a Canadian student is straightforward when you follow the right steps and prepare your documents in advance. The journey may have its hurdles, but the rewards of studying in the UK are more than worth it!
