This might sound like a silly question, because after all, who wouldn’t want to study at one of the best universities in the world? However, it is important to investigate if the university’s teaching methods match your learning style and if you have the required grades. For example, terms are often shorter at Oxbridge universities, meaning more intensive study loads.
Oxbridge entry requirements
In order to secure an offer at Oxford, A*A*A or AAA is required from your A-levels (subject dependant) or 38-41 in the IB. For Cambridge, the standard candidate is expected to achieve A*A*A or A*AA depending on the course, equivalent 40-41 in the IB. Entry requirements at Oxbridge universities are high, and only the best students will be considered.
Choosing the right Oxbridge course
Choosing a high ranking UK university to study at is a top priority for many applicants, but it is also of vital importance to consider which course you are applying for. Research its content, career prospects, and what former students have said. Compare to similar courses at other universities to learn if the modules are similar to what appeal to your interests.
Oxbridge application deadlines
Due to the number of candidates applying to Oxbridge universities, the application deadline is much earlier. In order to be considered for the September 2019 intake, applications must be submitted by October 2018 for example. It is also important to note that students cannot apply to both Cambridge and Oxford at the same time, and must only choose one.

Oxbridge Admissions Tests test aptitude rather than knowledge, and this helps universities distinguish excellent candidates from merely good ones. Don’t expect the tests to be straight forward question and answer briefs – questions are often obtuse and require the candidate to think outside the box.

Your grades will only get you so far when applying to Oxbridge, as all students are required to also pass an interview. Interviewers will be looking for candidates who are passionate about their interests, with enthusiasm a key trait in succeeding. Questions tend to focus on your personal statement so ensure you can back up and discuss at length what you have written down.
